What is Klonopin?
Klonopin is the most common brand name for the drug Clonazepam. It is a medication in the Benzodiazepine class used in the treatment of seizures, panic disorders, and a movement disorder known as akathisia. It is a tranquilizer that is taken in pill form and the effects will typically last anywhere from six to twelve hours. Some of the minor side effects include sleepiness, decreased coordination, and agitation. There is a high chance of becoming dependent on the drug if used for longer than four weeks.
What are the Penalties for Possession and Distribution of Klonopin?
Along with a handful of other prescription drugs, Klonopin is classified as a Schedule IV drug by the DEA under the Controlled Dangerous Substances Act. Schedule IV drugs are defined as having:
- Low potential for abuse relative to Schedule III and higher drugs.
- A currently acceptable medical use in the United States.
- The possibility of leading to limited physical dependence or psychological dependence relative.
Like other drug charges, Klonopin charges in NJ will vary depending on the amount that is found in your possession. Since Klonopin is a prescription drug, you can also be penalized for obtaining it in an illegal way.
